Cleaning up the Town: The battle for sanitary reform in Hertford in the mid nineteenth century – Part 2
In September 2024 HALH published a Supplement to its journal Herts Past & Present. The title of the Supplement was: Cleaning up the Town: The battle for sanitary reform in Hertford in the mid nineteenth century – Part 1: 1844–49. Written by Paul Gatland, it told the story of a major controversy which erupted in Hertford during the 1840s over the question of public health reform. The story is not only intriguing in itself but it provides an insight into the political and social life of a small county town at that time. Part 2 of the Supplement has now been published, carrying the story forward to the period 1849–53.
